We'll see.
It first week of classes this week and ive already cocked things up. All three of my classes clash with each other. I have CAiD and Studio (Silence and other sounds) on thursdays at the same time. And then studies and studio on fridays at the same time. I guess im going too have to change tech classes with is pretty annoying as none of the other 'toolkits' sound particually appealing. I'll probably have to go into sand casting too as i think its the only one that isnt full. Fiddle sticks! I was looking forwards to learning rhino. Oh well, what can ya do...

In other news i was thinking about starting another comic competition like the one i ran last year. iv had a few requests from people lately. So i'll try and get that up this week.

I'll also try and put up a couple of pictures of some projects iv worked on these holidays.

Thats all for now, see you all at workshop on friday.

My very late brief...

Braden Keir S3107876

Dining Experience Brief - Communal Kitchen

Background

A few weeks ago, I attended an alternative lifestyle festival called ‘Confest’. At this festival there was system of cooking and dining in which a kitchen and pantry were set up where everyone could come together and with or for their friends and also complete strangers. The pantry was stocked with food that donated by people at the festival or bought with donated money. This allowed for a very diverse range of food available that reflected the tastes of the people using the kitchen.

By cooking with a bunch of strangers, you are able to relate those people in a way that you wouldn’t usually experience, and through collaborating with other people with different backgrounds and experiences, all parties are able to learn from each other and add their influence to the meal.

Concept

For this project I hope to design a communal kitchen for inner Melbourne. This would be a space where people could come together to prepare and share food. Anyone arriving at the kitchen would be able to start a new meal, assist in preparing someone else’s meal, or share a meal that someone else has prepared. Anyone starting a meal would be asked to cook more than enough for people they arrived with so that other people could share their meal as well.

Ideally it would be free to use, and all food would be donated by participants (however probably isn’t feasible and there may need to be either an entry free or a compulsory donation).

The target audience for this kitchen would be just about everyone from kids making themselves afternoon tea after school, to families going out to lunch, young adults out to meet new people. With help from the local council it could also play the role of a soup kitchen for the homeless.

Possibly Difficulties

When placed in the city, this communal kitchen concept runs into serval problems which will need to be designed around.

Firstly, there’s hygiene. There are currently very strict standards that must be adhered to when preparing food. When you allow the general public into the kitchen, its very difficult to make sure these standards are maintained.

Next there’s the issue of trust. Outside of a festival context, you can no longer assume that everyone is friendly. Some kind of security measures would be necessary to prevent the possibility of intentional poisoning.

Then there are finances. While it would be lovely if this project was run and maintained by the good will of the local community, this probably isn’t feasible. Staff would be necessary to assure the kitchen is run safely responsible and respectfully. There is also the likely situation that not enough people would donate food or money to the kitchen.

New Feature: BLOGLINES!

I've been off on camp with the 1st years and i must d lair ay, i had a ball. Overscaled projects that spiral out of control are always good fun. Highlight of the camp? Building a giant effigy of a pregnant teddy bear to hang and then burn. This thing was MASSIVE! Like 7 or 8 metres. I'll post up some pics later. Unfortuately I had to leave before the actual burning, but hopefully Andrew got some good footage of it. My hands are so hacked up from working with that cane and wire. It was good fun having minions i could set to work on different tasks.

In other news, iv set myself up a 'bloglines'. The days of stalking round this massive web of blogs hunting for new posts are finally over. Now all i have to do is wait as they are they unwittingly drawn from all corners of design:dissent into my lair where i sit ready to .... errr ... read them.

Rev 1: Heres a photo of the bear.

Memoirs of a Geisha

I went out and saw 'Memoirs of a Geisha' last night at Melbourne Central. Over all it was a decent film. The cinematography was beautiful and there was some absolutely majestic scenery, like one scene where they are walking down narrow path with towering bamboo forest on either side.
I did find the story line a little disappointing however. It felt like just another love story. I would have like to see much more of the japanese culture and less of the girl pining for some old man. But thats just me. I was also a little disapointed to find that theyd used chinese actresses for the 2 leading roles. Surely japan has some acting talent to offer? Oh well.
After that i went round to Robot for a drink, but they were only playing Spirited Away which I'd already seen several times before. Still, it was a very nice little place to sit and chat.

Renovations

I picked up a large peice of laminated partical board from uni last week when i was in there painting. I really should have know better. Half an hour later another student arrive (Nasa i think his name was), and then a further half hour later liam turned up and we were able to start. I was a little dissapointed to find that we were just going to be painting the wall white, but i must admit it does look alot better. Its abit sad to be loosing the freedom we had to just do whatever we wanted with the walls, not that we ever really used it. It was just nice having that freedom there. Oh well. Raph and Liam turned up later on and we ended up getting quite a lot of work down. Oh and John an Paul from the workshop too.
I found a nice piece of laminated partical board in a pile of stuff to be thrown out in building 87, with i plan on using to extend my desk so that i can actually fit my computer in it properly. This setup is doing horrible things for my spine. It was a lot of fun getting that home on the train...
I had quite a character to keep me company on the ride home. A complete nutjob arguing with a whole host of invisible beings. The one he seemed to have the most to say to was named "Older sister". Every 10-15 minutes he'd hobble over to me and very earnistly tell me that 'Older sister has an older brother' several times untill he was satisfied that i'd understood then hobble back to his side of the train. Only to come back and tell me the same thing a few stops later. God bless public transport crazies.

Mars Volta

I've just got home from the Mars Volta concert at the palace. I keep thinking of things i want to post about, but i never quite seem to get round to actually posting... oh well.
Yesterday, my mate Alex and I headed into the botanical gardens with a video camera to try and scope out some good setting for a little film project we want to try. However, we found the gardens to be much to landscaped and clean cut for what we're after so we ended up going home empty handed. Still, it we had a very pleasent stroll in the park so its wasnt a complete waste of time.

Check out this beast i found in the vegie patch. Its about the size of my lower leg, maybe even a bit bigger. You really gotta keep an eye on zuccinis. If you dont pick them when theyr a senisible size they just keep on growing, and end up tasting like wood. That small zook at the back is about the size you'd usually buy at a supper market. Iv also got a lot of pumpkins growing and im tempted to try slipping a milk carton or something a round one to make a square pumpkin. But im on holidays now so i make no apologies, so there. Anyway, here's what i did...

once the wire frames have been completely covered in 'feathers', i used a heat gun to bend shape 2 pieces of ridged PVC conduet and attached them to the top of the frames.

... Then i got a $5 op shop suit jacket onto which mum kindly sewed 2 button holes for the wings to slide into (she wont let me touch the sewing machine after last time)...

... Next I got my broken old school back pack and cut it in half so that it was only the straps connected to a rectangle of fabric. I got mum to sew on some loops and pockets for the pvc pipes to slide into. this would go under the jacket so that the wings slide through the holes in the jacket into the back pack.

Here how it looked when i put it all together. Having the pack on underneath meant that the jacket didnt quite fit, so i was unable to button it up with out looking like i was wearing a corset.

I also made a mask to go with the outfit but it looked so trashy that im not going to post it here. The wings were a hit at the party though. It was a small hall party so wear these giant wings made it particularly difficult to manuver around the place with out taking any one out. Luckly my friends were more than happy to make the occasional trip to the bar from me so it all worked out (thanks fellas!).

Look alike?

You scored as Beyonce. I decided ill to go as Harvey Birdman.
At the moment im working on making a set of wings...
I got the idea for the feathers from Carls lamp. Theyr just piece of rice paper folded around a length of wire, stuck with spray adhesive and then cut to shape.

Next I build a wire frame a little bit taller than me, and stared attaching the feathers...

...And kept on attaching feathers...

One down (almost), and one to go. Sorry i coundnt make it to the ID outing thingy, but it was one of my good mates birthday and she decided to celebrate it in a storm water drain in South Yarra.
I met up with some friends to go and help set everything up at about 6 oclock last night, by which time it was really starting to pour so we were quite nervous about herding 20 - 30 people down an abandoned drain to the point that we were concidering calling everyone up and moving the party else where. But when we actually got down there, we found that the water level wasn't too bad and we had hear from a friend in cave clan that there was a manhole was could get out from at the far end so we decided to press ahead. The enterance to the tunnel is about the width of a road lane with a river of water about a metre wide running down the centre. Inside it was pitch black and seemed to go on for about 2 or 3 blocks before it opened up into a wider chamber with lendges along all the walls complete with couches and rugs. All the walls were painted in awsome murals and all sorts of posters. There was absolutely no light in there but we brought bags of candles with us and we lined the ledges with them creating an awsome eery feel to the place. That combined with the bjork playing out of the portable sterio we brought with us was quite spectacular.
A little while later friends started turning up and a the whole party in a drain thing when done surprisingly well and it ended up bring an absolutely fantastic night. Anyway, it seemed to a very small, subdued affair with a handfull of people lounging around in the sun listening to some nice dub, not really worth the $10 entry fee, but id come all this way...
It didnt take us long find some people we knew and their were some pretty nice tunes playing so it was all good.
Being a hippy gathering, there were serveral workshops going on around the place including lucid dreaming, yoga and dance and other forms of new age healing. I was pretty interested in trying kundalini yoga as id read quite abit about it, so some friend and i turned up at the place and time allocated for the workshop. It didnt take long for us to realise some thing was wrong. This was kundalini, but it wasnt yoga... it was kundalini dance, completely with chanting and other strange noises. Too late to back out now. Two of the things im probably least comfortable with are singing and dancing and now is doing both of them in the wierdest possible way infront of a somewhat amused crowd. I couldnt even see my comfort zone from here.
I did feel good to have done it though, and the actual workshop proved have some interesting effects (although it probably would have been a bit more effective in a more relaxed environment. I havent been acting very busy tho unfortunately. An may i also apoligies few not coming through with my promise of comics. I think im going to put that idea off till the holidays when i have a little more time for it.
I'd been feeling a bit glum this week being cooped up in front of my computer doing my flash (And not just any old flash. Ive been rotascoping. THE DEVILS WORK!) I think ive drewn myself in 40 frames so far, and it only comes to 8.5 seconds. Why oh why did i choose to do it in 25 FPS?
Anyway, last night i finally got out of the house and went to 'Lental as anything' with 2 of my chums. What a fantastic restuarant! The way the place works is, you order a meal, you enjoy the meal, and then you decide what you think the experience was worth and thats what you pay. Awsome! Such trust! Its like listening to a busker. Your not obliged to pay him/her, but you do anyway because its the right thing to do. So we turned up to this place at around 8 o'clock. It was a really nice warm night and i was in great mode cos i hadnt seen those 2 in ages (damn you RMIT!). When we got there the place was full which was a bit of a surprise although it probably shouldnt have been as it was in Acklind street (sp?).
So we left a phone number with them and took a strole down to the beach. By this time it had started to rain a little, and by the we got to the beach it had brewed into quite a spectacular thunder storm with the whole sky lighting up neon purple with every lighting strike. After enjoying the storm for a little while, we got a call to say there was a free table for us (how conciderate) and we headed back and just got in the door when the rain kicked in it up a gear or two and started pelting down monsoon style.
We sat down at table near the front window so that we could watch the weather and we had a read through the menu and page describing the restuarants philisophy. The music was great. It was all exotic instruments and in a language i dont speak so my mind did keep trying to follow the lyrics which was a plus.
We ended up ordering a curry sampler and a japanese udonyaki to share between the 3 of us (a bit strange mixing japanese and indian, but what the hell) and also a cup of bumbu each which is coffee substitute. The bumbu tasted abit like weak coffee flavoured with toffee and nuts. Quite nice. A ondunyaki is quite tasty too, but the currys were awsome. They actually managed to cook eggplant (AKA the devils vegetable!) in a palitable manner. So palitable infact that in was my flavour food there. If your ever in st kilda and looking for a good feed, check out lental as anything. It get the "Bray's tick of approval".
On the way home, the 3 of us were discussing the possibility of moving out into an partment together, with maybe 1 or 2 other people. Me and reuben both dont have jobs and have never really had to fend for our selves before, so we decided that the best way to go into this was to aproach it as an experiemental project. We would all sit down a plan out all the finacial issues and find a place we can aford, but go into it accepting that it may all fail miserably. As long as we're careful not pay for anything in credit we would have nothing to loose and if thing do go pear shaped we can just go back to how we are now. This also means we can be as crazy and idealistic as we want with the way the place is run which is prospect i find particually exciting after all my research on anarchism for studies.

Before i go i should probably speak my peace about this new magazine project for studio. I wasnt in a great mood on the day we were planning it having missed lunch and i had a nasty headache, so i kept quiet. I really wasnt in the mood for starting fights, but i wasnt too happy with where the mag was headed.
I was excited about making a publication of what we'd done when the idea first came up and we were talking about how it would documentation of our process, rather than a major project in itself. I loved the idea of compiling snipets of everyones blogs to show the change in how we thought about studio over the semester.
But last sessions discusion seemed to be about producing something else entirely. Instead of compiling what we've done already people seemed to want to do and produced a huge quanitity of new material purely to make this magazine. And the blogs seemed be taking the back seat in the mag when they are really the most valuable documentation we have as they were actually writen during the semester rather than all this writing reviews afterwards which is a bit pointless in many cases as most of us look at this studio completely differently than we did 2 months ago.
Bah! Anyway, ive had my little rant and got that off my chest. I realise its far too late as we're putting this thing together in a few day and im sorry i didnt bring any of this up earlier.
Hopefully this offering of a post will be enough to opease the blogger gods for now. Im off to get my self some sleep and hopefully regain a little sainity. Nighty night.

More fun than a hat full of boxes

After playing the 6 hat game in Kate's playgroup, I've decided to try and incorporate the hats into my blog. So I've gone and writen a little flash program that randomly chooses a hat. The idea was that to have it in the side bar of my blog some that everytime some visits my blog they are alocated a hat (either one of De Bono's ones, or one of my own) so that if they are commenting on something on blog they have the option of using the hat to influence their comment. i havent figured how to put it in the sidebar yet, so ill just put it here for now...
Box of hats
Damn, it cant even put it in a post properly... It was fantastic! We basically sat around discussing randomly selected senerios using one of the 6 thinking hats. For thoe of you who are unfimiliar with the hats, they are....

White - What do you no about the problem, and what other information do you need?
Black - What are the dangers associated with this problem?
Yellow - What are the Pros?
Green - Creative/unusual response
Red - First reaction/thought
Blue - The crap hat (im sorry blue hat, i dont really think your crap. I just dont really understand you...) Something about planning a thought process for the problem. We just ignored this one...

The session went really well and it was great doing creative thinking just for the joy of it istead of working to resolve a problem or or produce something. I left with a head dancing with images of crazy possibilities...

Ive been toying with the idea of starting up a journal style comic here. Iv seen a few resently that have worked really well and i think i might like to give it a go. Im not gonna commit to weekly comics or anything like that though. I've got one ready from yesterday, but its gonna take some stuffing around to get it up here. ill do it tomorrow.

I had so many posts planned out in my head, but i never seem to get round to putting them up here. I have a natural aversion to writing and i find it exceedingly difficult to communicate my thoughts here, which is one reason for the comic i guess. Maybe this blogging will do me good if i can just force myself to keep doing it.

Anyway, thats enough out of me for now. Im off to bed.
Layla tov

Photobucket

This is a test post from Photobucket.com

My lamp is finished at last

Well its finally finished.
I had a few stability issues so i went out and bought some quick set concrete and 6 feet of steel tubing. So we broke up into groups and started discussing the pros and cons of current course and things we'd like to get out it. In terms of redesigning the course we failed miserably. We were all to caught up in the way things are at the moment to see any possiblities (at least thats how it felt to me). I found this quite frustrating at really helped show me how far i have to go as a designer. On the positive side, this exercise was a great opportunity to reflect on course so far and on my own growth along the way. As we went through pointing out what we want out of a studio class and what we get from soumitri, it started to sink in just how valueable this course is.
Lots of people were very frustrated with this course at the start of the semester and some still are (i was quite confused about what was going on at the start of sememster too). I've come to the conclusion that altho its much fun being confused and frustrated, in order to make any major shift in the way you think, and make that change quickly, a period confusion and resistence is pretty much inevitable. Because when we started out we had one way of looking at things which we conciders to be the right way of doing things, this "new way" naturally wouldnt sit well with us as we'd be judging it using our old "vce" way of thinking as the benchmark. So i process like this is always going to be a bit challenging but thats ok. its all part of the learning .
Soumitris teaching process is very different than any i have encounted during my education. It reminds me very much of the buddhist master approach of "a fool who persists in his folly will become wise." i.e. He gives us a task that we will inevitably fail, and we keep failing untill we see the folly of our approach. A frustrating process, but very freshing change from spoon feeding.
Anyway, its approaching 2 in the morning so ill leave it there for now. I was thinking this might be a fun little student project, so I've wipped up a little comic strip and now its your jobs to fill it in. All ID students are welcome to join in. Just down load the pic, add in captions, stick it on the net some where and put the url here in comments. Once a few people have done it ill post them up here. The comics a bit crappy, but its my first try at this kinda thing so cut me some slack. As well as added captions, you can also make alterations to the drawing. They should look great. I didnt get to find out what that Paap's game was... Anyone got any clue?

After lunch we all had to play our games with the folks from Scott's studio. This happened with limited success. Haley, Kelly, Anara and I played the game with the badges ( i think Soumitri named it Mushroom). The game wasnt played terrible enthusiastically by our guest players, but this really didnt surprise me. When we first came into Soumitri's studio, we were all a bit reluctant to step out side our comfort zones too. Also, it was the end of the day and i think most people just wanted to go home. Lots of people have been suggesting that we have all learned a new and better way of thinking that the others couldnt appreiciate our games because they are still suck thinking in 'redesign' mode. While i think we have learned a lot from Soumitri about about aproaching design, I dont think we suddenly learned the secret to being great designers or anything. We've only just started to change our way of thinking. We have had 6 weeks to get used to The Corporate Game, so playing these games is now inside our comfort zones. I think this was the main difference between the 2 groups on monday. The BodyLab folks werent comfortable with the games so they were less willing to take risks. And so the Games were a useless exercise. Weren't they? The failure of these games has given us a great opportunaty to reflect on how we have grown and how much further we have to go. I agree with Raph in that the fact we werent able to teach what we've learn to the other shows that we still have much to learn. Oh well, at least we seem to be on the right track. Kelly did do a great job of running the game however. She was able to hold in all together and improvise the rules when circumstances didnt allow the game to run properly. Kudos to you Kelly. While the games were played some what half-heartedly, so good stuff did come out of them. Steve and Austin's Crack pack was great idea. Our game produced a tangle of wire and mesh for the SeaArt competition, but I think with a lot of refinement it may have potential. I'll have a bit of a play with it this weekend.

Sorry about the photo Haley ;)

Up late

Well its midnight and this damn lamp isnt looking like it'll be finnished any time soon.
